Run Fat Boy Run

Please pardon the title for this blog post, but I wanted to make a post specifically about “The Journey” requirement we have for this year and I couldn’t help but think of the movie, Run Fat Boy Run with SImon Pegg. Simon Pegg was involved in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz which are two of my all time favorite movies and I really enjoy most of his work.

Anyways, onto the real reason for this post. While working at the Rib Fest, I heard that there was an upcoming 5k Run for life that would be held in Stony Plain on September 10th. The Run for Life is an event run by the Rotary club which raises funds for suicide prevention and awareness. Last year, my brother wound up bringing me to a 5k Mud run with like 3 days notice, and while I made it to the finish line, I was not fast, and I didn’t really do very well. It was a brutal slog, and I was meaning to do a 5k run again but with a bit more training and prep. Combined with the fact that our Ih Ho Chuan requirement is to walk/run/bike/etc. 1609 km this year I thought it would be a great idea to start training for a 5km run to get some distance for my requirements log.

Thinking about our requirements got me to go back through my fitness watch records and actually note how far I have made it so far this year, and it was really encouraging and rewarding to see the numbers are actually really close to where I wanted them to be, with my travel distance now being over 700 kms this year. But adding some running training would still help to really get that distance to a good place.

I started to work through a 5k Run Training program with Zombies, and I was having a blast stretching my legs and getting my heart pumping. Unfortunately, I seem to have jumped in a bit too fast and without properly stretching. Somehow, I tweaked my ankle, and I’ve wound up wearing an ankle brace all week now. I think I tried to do too much too soon, and I have too many years of abuse on my ankles for the sudden stress. It seems like almost every year I roll my ankle pretty bad and hear an audible pop as I damage the joint. I didn’t roll my ankle this time, but I don’t think the joint was ready for my newly found enthusiasm, and it is definitely letting me know that it is not happy at the moment. I’m still planning and hoping to participate in the Run for life in September, but I’m not going to be running until the ankle has had some time to recover. In the meantime, I am still trying to get some walking in and to keep building my distance for my logbook.

  1. Ok, first off, Simon Pegg is one of my personal heroes. Have you seen Spaced?!

Second off, I need to train for a 5k run, too. Do you want to run together sometime? When your ankle is feeling better, and we can go easy, for both our sakes!
