Community

This past weekend, I wound up volunteering to help with the Spruce Grove Rotary Rib Fest. Originally, I had only signed up for a shift from 10AM – 1PM, but I found I was having a lot of fun, and they were short of volunteers. Ultimately, I wound up being at rib fest all day Saturday, Sunday and again this morning to help with the cleanup and tear down. This weekend was a great chance to meet people from the community and to begin building some new friendships.

One of the things that has most impressed me with Kung Fu is that aspect of community. Until I joined Kung Fu, I only really knew my family that lived in the area. By joining Kung Fu, I began to build friendships and connections with other people in the area. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the activities that we have done outside the Kwoon. The new years banquet, the tree planting activity and the cultural campfire have been highlights for me personally. I love the fact that the kwoon is involved in and tries to connect and reach out to our community.

Rib fest was a similiar experience, It helped me to connect with the local community, and being involved with these type of events really helps to create a feeling of being involved with and connected with our community. It has begun to create a feeling that this area is home and it feels like this is a place where I could happily spend some time.

Also, I really enjoyed the class this evening and the slide strike from four sides was a lot of fun. I think it would be a great sequence to continue to practice and refine forms with. Plus if I could get fast at it, I think it would look really cool.
