Paddy the Pirate

Three dogs on a couch
T2 – Left, Paddy – Middle, Marika – Right

This past Saturday was rough. We have three dogs, Marika a Havanese, and her two puppies Paddy and T2 who are Havanese crossed with Japanese Chins. The brothers are about three years old now and have always lived together. Occasionally, they get into little spats trying to establish who the alpha is. They’ve never actually hurt each other before though and it is more of a wrestle than a fight though. We’ve tried to minimize this as best as possible and to discourage the behaviour whenever and however possible. We had a lot of people over for Easter dinner on Friday including my brother and his dog. This seems to have disrupted their routine enough that they wound up having a fight Saturday morning.

I think T2 knocked paddy off of the couch, and paddy landed on his head. His eye popped out of his head, and we wound up rushing him into the Vet ER in Edmonton. The damage was extensive, and for a bit we were worried Paddy would need to be put down. They were able to stabilize him though and they wound up removing his eye. He’s back home now and recovering, but it was an emotional rollercoaster of a day.

Paddy is home and recovering, but the two brothers are being completely separated. I believe the situation was an accident, but we don’t want either animal to have to live in fear of being hurt. One of my younger brothers will be taking Paddy once he is done with his course of medication and has had his stitches removed. In the meantime, Paddy just seems to want cuddles and I have started to call him Paddy the Pirate. I’m tempted to make him an eye patch.

It was a crap day, but I am very relieved that Paddy is okay and that we will be able to move him somewhere he will be safe and where he will still receive lots of love and cuddles.
